My approach to teaching is more of a "why" approach. It is more important for students to know why something is or works rather than just how. This approach works well for middle and high school students. It allows students not only to understand the ideas taught but to apply them to other areas as well. I approach teaching first as a learner; I learn what the student's main concerns are and what goals they have for themselves. Second, I teach and leave room for questions, concerns and confusion. This approach to teaching focuses on the major concerns of the student (or parent)rather than focus on an overarching theme like how to read or how to write. If the student's only concern is how to use a comma, then that will be the focus of the lesson rather than focusing entirely on all grammar.
