I am a “hands-on” type of teacher who likes to get a lot of senses involved in order to enhance student learning. I generally do some initial direct instruction while explaining a new concept, and then I reinforce and assess understanding by doing group projects or activities. Because of my experience with cognitive training, I am also able to use strategies to help students who struggle with memory, attention, and processing. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs. While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I graduated with a B.S. degree in early childhood education from Iowa State University in 2004. As a result, I have had the chance to substitute teach and tutor in Iowa and California.
