Teaching and School Counseling Services In One Place!

My style of education is to teach by modeling. Students need to see things in a step-by-step format with instructions, followed by an immediate example. I also provide sample argumentative essays for students who learn by seeing a complete model. My counseling style is to work with students, first by building a rapport and then using that as the foundation to get a feel for their college/career interests. I then look at their grades to help them build a custom transitional plan into early adulthood.
I have been a teacher for the last fifteen years. I teach social studies, but my specialization is teaching argumentative (college level) writing.I have done plenty of SAT prep and tutoring for students at the high school and college level. I am also a school counselor and can offer a vast array of services including FASFA, Naviance/Common Application and college/career counseling.

More About This Tutor...

Upon graduation from college in the 80's, I taught adult education for three years. I then entered the business world, where I had a successful career in sales and operations management. In 2009, I chose to leave my corporate career and reenter education because of a desire to utilize my strengths and do something that helps people. I obtained my certification in English from the State of Connecticut in 2010. This past school year, I worked in Special Education and as a long-term substitute, teaching English to ninth through twelfth graders.
I enjoy working with children, and have a passion for literature and language. I believe that my love of the written word can be “contagious”, and that by modeling this love of literature, my students will come to see the value in studying the classics: insight into the thoughts and ideas of others. I believe in teaching hands on and focusing on children's strengths rather than their weaknesses. Once the basics are established, there are unlimited opportunities.
I have a double degree in Accounting and Finance and have had the opportunity to put these degrees to use in the workplace. Whether it's financial statement analysis or remediation, I have the hands on experience in accounting and finance that enables me to relate classroom concepts to real world problems. I believe that each student can learn, but every student learns in a different way. It is the teacher's job, therefore, to ensure that his or her teaching style accommodates the student. For students who are more visual learners, I may provide visual aids along with the rest of my material. It is important to assess a student's learning profile before teaching takes place. I also strive to create a warm, caring environment when teaching. I believe not only in providing information, but also providing support and nurturing my students.

More About This Tutor...

I had once been told by a very seasoned teacher that "If you can not go through the front door find an open window." She opened my eyes to creative, and interesting ways to stimulate young minds. I love helping children learn, and finding their open window. A great teacher can incorporate different styles of teaching to adapt to a child's learning ability.
As a hardworking individual with excellent communication skills, I would like to explore the possibility of putting my talents and experience to help children. Currently I have a successful and satisfying career with Artwell Gallery, a nonprofit community based art gallery. However I am looking forward to embarking on a new career. I hold a BA in Radio, Television, and Film from Rowan University. For three years I worked in a pre-school teaching Art to students aged three to five.
