Spelling is one of my top subjects! I use Structured Word Inquiry to help students learn the meanings of the word root and affixes. This aides in the understanding of why words are spelled the way they are.

I have 20 years of teaching experience. I am an Orton Gillingham trained reading tutor for students with reading delays and dyslexia. I teach both math and reading in a multi-sensory way in which students can experience learning with both their hands and mind. This method helps students remember the information better to scaffold learning. I am experienced in teaching students grades 1-8. I try to get to know what tactics help each student succeed in the best way possible. According to what the student's interests and hobbies are, I create a tutor and study plan specific to them to help them succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

When training employees, my teaching style has always been to learn by doing. I believe that people do best in learning a new task when one explains the task before doing, then shows how to do the task while explaining, and then asks the trainee to do the task with guidance. The same goes for teaching an academic subject - explain how it is done, show a couple of examples while explaining, and then ask them to try with guidance. If this method of teaching is not working for a particular student, I will adapt my teaching to fit his/her needs. I believe that every person has the ability to learn any subject; one just needs to find the method in order to keep them interested and absorbing information.

I achieved an English degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where my senior thesis was selected as a finalist for the UW Creative Writing prize. I am passionate about the English language, but I think that writing is becoming a lost art. Quality writers are quality communicators. As writing in general falls into disrepair, those who can write clearly and read critically will have an edge in every institution they enter--from the University, all the way to the workplace.
