A Little Bit About Me...

I have recently received my Ph.D. in biochemistry from the laboratory of Prof. F. Peter Guengerich at Vanderbilt University. I am seeking a teaching position near my family in Minnesota. I was a chemistry tutor in college for two years and I have spent a great deal of time informally teaching in the laboratory in graduate school. In addition to teaching one semester at the local community college, I also mentored two graduate students in our laboratory.
My approach to teaching science is to begin by applying the basic principles of biology and chemistry to everyday life. I believe it’s easier to understand these subjects when they are related to human health and current events. I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. I know that the content knowledge is an essential ingredient for a tutor; however, to be truly effective, i believe a tutor must combine content knowledge with empathy, honesty and humor. In addition I demonstrate a caring attitude. Caring consists of being organized for the tutoring session, being punctual and gaining the students trust.
I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career.
