I believe that Mathematics is the language of all sciences, and that children need a good foundation in this subject to succeed. I am passionate about achieving understanding of Mathematical topics in a child, since I believe many children dislike Math simply because they do not understand it. I greatly enjoy working with all types of children and look forward to contributing to bettering our future by working with our young people one on one. As a Penn State graduate, I earned a B.S. in Earth Sciences with a minor in Chemistry, assisting a paleoclimatology laboratory on campus for three years. I then enrolled at Bloomsburg University as a graduate student for a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction, and worked as a graduate assistant. I then completed student teaching at Williamsport Area School District in a high school chemistry class and a middle school science class. I am a certified chemistry teacher for the state of Pennsylvania with all proper clearances and references, including Act 34, 114, 151, and several personal references. My teaching style is more student centered. I believe that involving the students with hands on activities allows them to grasp and understand certain topics easier. Especially in a science classroom where we are studying intangible topics, like the core of the earth, or the stars, or the atmosphere, students may have difficulties understanding these ideas from a strictly lecture based approach to educating. Also I understand that schools are becoming more and more diverse regarding the student body population. This fact means that it is important for me to use multiple types of assessment and teaching methods in the classroom.

A Little Bit About Me...

As I finished up my studies, started tutoring for lower level math majors. This included Calculus I,II,III, and statistics. As I moved on through classes, I began teaching more abstract classes in Mathematical theory. This experience has helped me able to explain a complex topic in simple terms.
I usually spend the first session finding a child's weaknesses in the subject. After this, I will prepare a list of problems for the child to work on under my supervision. As he works I will let him make his mistakes and then help him correct them. This, in my opinion, is the greatest way to learn math. Practice makes perfect.
