I also began piano lessons in my home as well. During college i studied piano, voice and dance and continued teaching in these areas. I presently am a certified substitute teacher in the Cumberland County, PA, public school system, where I teach almost all grade levels and subjects. Reviewing their previous work and giving a current test is a good indicator of the situation. I believe in practice and examples as the clearest path to success. I don't hand deliver answers and I make the process towards answers engaging. I make sure the time and place are conducive to active and non-distractive learning. I relay the importance and relevance of the material. I recap previous lessons and try to integrate them into current assignments. I believe in constructivism. Students learn more when they make their own learning. They need to see the real world application of the material and how it applies to them. I enjoy teaching anyone regardless of his or her age and level of education. Patience and creative presentation are qualities that help me observe a student’s approach to learning and give them an understanding of how to complete a task. I have found that often students’ difficulties are overcome by working through the problems together, explaining ideas in multiple ways until the student is confident in his or her understanding of the idea. However, I strongly believe that each student must be able to complete his or her own work. Thus, I make sure they can duplicate the work on their own. I have experience in public presentation, but I prefer to work with students in smaller groups so that I can give them individualized help.
