A Little Bit About Me...

As a parent concerned about the condition of the public school system we decided to homeschool our last two children. I began teaching them in the first grade and have continued up to, and including, the present time. My son is now a high school freshman and my daughter is in the eighth grade. During this time I helped start a homeschool cooperative. We wanted to continue homeschooling our children, but we also wanted to provide them with more choices taught by someone experienced, or having an expertise in an area. For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I do not have a specific style of teaching for each student. Each student has their different way of learning. I would start out trying several ways, such as; visual, hearing, physical etc and see what the student is most comfortable with and which one is most likely to educate the child in a way that the student will remember the information while struggling the least.
I have tutored students individually at school, but a tutor needs to start somewhere or will never get experience. I have always helped fellow students with homework by explicitly explaining answers when they are asked or at least triggering their minds to what they need to learn. I am anxious to teach middle school aged kids as it will be a fun experience and I have always thought about teaching kids, because we all need to have the opportunity to an education.
