I have had nearly five years of experience in tutoring and mentoring. During college I was an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor at two different non-profits. I currently am an Americorps member in the Downriver communities. In this position I teach ESL, GED prep, after-school tutoring, as well as a science program aimed at elementary students in River Rouge.
I have a hands on teaching style that mixes fun activities with an emphasis on asking children questions. I pay attention to each individual student and try to figure out what their learning style is. I love teaching students of all ages and I recognize that most students do not get the help they need during the school day, which is why it is important for them to get the help they need outside of class. Each student learns differently and it is important for me to figure out a way that works best for him or her so that I can instill the techniques that will help them throughout their entire educational career. I find that many students get frustrated when they don’t understand and if I take the time to help them at their own pace in a teaching style that works best for them school becomes less stressful.
