Using student interests can help direct teaching that improves students’ enjoyment of learning. For instance, when teaching reading to boys I have found that they often like to read more factual reading material about sports, science, history, mechanics, etc. Student interests change as they get older and reading material needs to be age appropriate. Students thrive on positive re-enforcements, but the best motivation is personal success. Teaching is a wonderful experience! My teaching style is laid-back, I'd say. I like having conversations in order to determine how someone learns. I think people learn best when discussing the material and really think it out before they start creating something. Guiding a student down the path of their own learning style is important because they will need those skills in the future when they go off to college or start a career on their own. I want each of my students to reach their full potential, and have some fun along the way. The experience of twenty-three years in the classroom has taught me a great deal about how to address a wide range of skills and abilities in students. I know that some students learn better using auditory means, while others learn more visually, or that some are linguistic learners, some spatial learners, and some learn through body kinesthetics. I would need to know how the students in my care learn best, and then structure a curriculum to fit those needs. Conferring with parents would be an invaluable tool to assist me in my teaching.
