Teaching patience and fun learning!

I have a lot of experience teaching children in many areas of study and extra curricular activities such as; swimming, art, English, spelling and reading. I have this experience in a professional classroom setting and at home. I taught an ESL (English as a second language) course to many students who started out knowing no English at all, and I have also been an Au Pair who's main objective was to help the children understand English grammar. I volunteered in Big Brothers Big Sisters where I tutored my little Brother one on one in reading and spelling. Many years experience in art and art lessons. Finally, I also volunteered in my university's Girls in Science day, a day once a year devoted to helping girls become interested in math and science.

A Little Bit About Me...

Tutoring offered the unique opportunity of finding what works best for each student when it comes to studying a specific subject. Every student learns differently and as a tutor my first goal has always been to help the student find what his or her strengths are and used them to achieve his or her goals. I love tutoring young children, teenagers, and adults. Since the experience is different every time that challenges me to be studying constantly as well.
My experience as a tutor started when I was in high school teaching English as a second language to French and Creole speaking students. I also tutored freshman students on courses related to my major when I was in college. A Little Bit About Me...

The satisfaction that comes from working with a student, one on one, who is struggling, and seeing them change from angry and insecure to confident and proud is immense. I haven't found it anywhere else. As a teacher, my initial goal is to discover how to facilitate the individual learning styles of my students. I strive to instill a confidence that will lead to a willing and open mind conducive to further learning.
I have been a playwright for the last ten years, which is why I chose to get my BA in writing. Being involved in extensive reading and writing programs in and out of school has given me a deep appreciation for words. Over the course of my education, I was fortunate enough to tutor several young students struggling with reading and writing, as well as weekly creative writing workshops with elementary students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have six years experience working with children of all ages in an educational capacity. I worked as a literacy tutor and I taught autistic pre-schoolers in the public school system. I also recently returned from teaching English (ESL conversation, reading and comprehension, writing and grammar) in South Korea where I worked and lived for eighteen months. I am now currently working as a substitute teacher in the public school system teaching all ages.

I enjoy working with all age groups and am able to interact very effectively with students from diverse backgrounds. Although as teacher/tutor/trainer I am keen to share the knowledge I have with students, I believe in challenging my students and encouraging them to not be afraid to learn through making mistakes. I also believe students learn in various ways, some are visual learners etc… while some are not; therefore my teaching style involves finding out what kind of learner the student is and adjusting my teaching style to adapt to his/her style of learning.

Having worked in supplemental education for quite some time, I have learned to hone in on the unique understanding of each individual student's needs. I enyoy working with adults as well as children, diagnosing the fundamental needs and moving forward at each individual student's pace. My teaching style differs somewhat based on the student I am working with. An energetic, confidence-boosting style is the approach that I prefer, but I also understand that you must build rapport with your students to be able to do that. My students are very comfortable working with me, and I encourage and draw questions out of even the most timid student.
