My teaching journey has taken me to many different places and I've had the opportunity to work with all ages of students from 3 year olds to college-age. Specifically I have experiences with students who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backrounds and also with students with special needs and learning disabilties. In the last few years I have tutored students one-on-one in organizational skills, studying for tests, writing and editing.
I find that students (myself included) learn best when they feel safe and that they can be successful. I believe it's important to teach in the zone of proximal development and build on a student's interests. I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. As a rising junior at Cornell University, I was asked to TA a Chemistry course for engineers. I accepted and entered into my first teaching position. Immediately, I knew teaching was right for me. Helping explain a complicated topic in a simple way and watch students get it is an amazing experience. I quickly signed up to TA 3 more courses next semester (Bio,Chem,CS).
