Enthusiastic and Passionate Chess Tutor

I am a recently graduated college student from Michigan with an intense passion for chess and teaching. In college, I helped run the Michigan State Chess Club first as vice-president and then as president. In 2015 and 2017, I won the Michigan Master/Expert Class Championship for class C and class B, respectively. After college, I was hired as the lead instructor for a local club. Currently, I tutor chess full time, both online and in-person, and many of my students have gone on to become top players.
When I teach I try to instill a deep love for the subject matter. My philosophy is that a student cannot be forced to learn but must want to learn. I achieve this by individualizing my lessons for each student and their playing style. Everyone learns differently and each lesson reflects this fact. Before our first lesson, I encourage students to tell me a little about themselves and ... read more

I am an essentialist in philosophy, meaning I want the student(s) to learn material that is relevant to their experiences and that they can find useful to their lives. I want to engage them in their learning so that they can use many different learning styles. I want to show them that learning is something they can do for the rest of their lives and that they benefit from their own hard work. Everyone can learn, as long as they have the desire to learn and are guided by someone willing to help them learn.
Growing up in a family that did not value an education, I saw education as a way to make a better life for my self than gangs, drugs, and violence. I am the only one in my family to graduate from high school, then college. I firmly believe that education makes a person better by pursuing it. I achieved an Associates in Science, then two Bachelors of Science degrees. In addi ... read more

As a current student at Central Michigan, I continue to strive for the best education I can possibly achieve. I have clepped out or aced all english classes at the college level and have found a great interest in writing and reading papers and essays. I am extremely familiar with both APA and MLA writing styles and have had numerous hours and years of practice writing papers and essays for my college level courses. I received a 1 on my MEAP writing and a 30 on my ACT writing/English section.
Al though I have never technically tutored or taught a child writing, I am interested in helping aid a child's learning experience. I am extremely personable and social, and would get along great with any child. I am patient, understanding and eager to provide my extensive knowledge of writing to those that need help.

I love working with students, particularly on an individual level. Classrooms can be fun, but I feel as though the greatest learning comes from personal interaction in one-on-one sessions. As such, I see teaching and learning as a relationship structured around mutual respect and positive reinforcement. I have a lot of experience trying to understand the "logic" of a student's error and helping them take the positive aspects of their work and build on them while overcoming the negative. All students are gifted; building on preexisting talents and predispositions should be the cornerstone of teaching. Consequently, I tend to guide students towards making their own discoveries and building their own conclusions. Education is and experience of growth and personal development, not a filling of mental file cabinets. Making a difference in a student’s life through education is like open ... read more

I create a positive atmosphere and help students to be responsible first to themselves and then to their community. I also try to make my students aware of their potiential and guide them in processing information by first understanding the context in which it is used. Then I like to use visuals in my teaching style. I prefer to start with testing of some kind to assess the developmental level of the student.
My teaching experience began with my work with troubled youth in Michigan. I worked with the Fine Arts Team using the arts to teach visually. I also used positive Peer Culture for helping students to deal with their problems. I slso taught history at the school. I have 8 years experience; I worked for WSI teacher staffing for 3 yrs. and 5 yrs. for the Battle Creek School System in grades K-12 in most subjects

My style of teaching is repetition of material focusing on specific areas where the student is having problems. One on one approach until the lesson is grasped by the student has proven to work more than group settings. Once the area of concern is learned the student usually continues getting it down pat on their own with me as backup or a question resource from that point.
I have 20+ years experience in the computer field and I had a 3.0 average in general studies. I have a BS in computer science and an AAS in microcomputer technology. I have two children ages eight and five. We learn with each other through discovery, often turning to our dictionaries and computers for information. I think that the greatest skill for one to learn is to be able to seek information that can be synthesized into the answer that is needed. I use constructive criticism, making statements that demonstrate why an answer or line of thinking is incorrect without implying that the learner is somehow less valuable for having come to an incorrect conclusion. I think that it is very important to build a student's confidence in themselves because it is only with self-confidence that one can graduate to self-efficacy.

A Little Bit About Me...

Opening doors and creating joy in learning is what I genuinely enjoy about teaching. Leading my students to see the world and themselves in new ways is one of the most satisfying aspects of the task. I teach with humor and compassion, but encourage self discipline and striving for personal best in each of my students. I believe that every person has the capacity to learn and teach critical and analytical skills, because the ability to think is the fundamental ability in all learning situations.
I am an Ivy League Graduate with Doctoral level graduate Studies from Indiana University. My minor for each of my study areas is Psychology. I have taught multiple subjects in academic, corporate, public service, K-12, and Emergency Medical Services and have been in training and education all of my professional career, currently tutoring in the Kalamazoo Public School systems. I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I try to envision at least 3 different ways of approaching a problem, I discuss material but let the students ask questions which I then tailor my explanations toward. Everyone sees a problem slightly differently and if you allow yourself an open mind and creative thinking often you can help them break through a difficult problem because you are able to see it their way.
I have spent the better part of my life either in school or teaching in one form or another. I highly value both the process of learning and of passing on my knowledge. I have intend to make this my life's work and as s ... read more

I enjoy helping children learn and realize that not all children learn the same way. I try to adapt to their learning style to make it easier for them to learn. I am patient and easy-going and enjoy the thrill when a child learns something new. It is truly the greatest feeling in the world.
As a Western Michigan University graduate, I have a strong feeling that education is the foundation that we build upon. Education is of the utmost importance these days with the world forever getting smaller and business continuing to become more global. It is in our best interests to see to it that our children of today build a firm foundation to build upon for our future. I enjoy working with young children and high school kids. I believe that it is important to get anyone I teach to be active in the education they are recieving. I believe that by showing a kid how to do something, then having them teach it back to me will help to stimulate them and retain the information. I think that everyone has the potential to become a great student if given the right mentorship.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most people learn best when they're having an enjoyable time doing it. By employing a fun, learn-at-your-own-pace style of teaching, I'm able to pull better results out of my students, and also leave them with a positive lasting impression for the subject. I'm a big proponent of life-time learning, and giving people the tools they need to succeed in whatever field I'm teaching for a very long time.
As a degree holder in both writing and literature, and having worked with children in a professional capacity for several years, I have extensive knowledge of both writing, reading and editing techniques, but my ability to teach does not end with them. I've always had a passion for the arts, and teaching them is my favorite way of enjoying them. Over the years of my education and in my professional experiences, I've written all kinds of essays, research papers, research projects, grant p ... read more

My accounting background has included developing accounting systems and policy and procedures for both "start-up" business and complete change required for "turn-around" organizations. My background also includes "big-four" experience as a CPA providing auditing, tax and consulting services for privately held and SEC organizations. Overall, I feel that I have a strong accounting background. My experience also includes extensive financial modeling experience using MS Excel for budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning.
I love mentoring staff / students. I find it very rewarding when the "light bulbs" start to go off with staff / students with respect to any topic. My style involves getting to know exactly where the individual is at relating to an area of study. I believe the student should be in control of the thought and learning process.
