I believe in meeting students right where they are, and letting them progress at their own rate. I make learning as relevant as possible and incorporate many hands-on learning opportunities. I present information in a multitude of ways, using modifications and graphic organizers. School should be fun, and most importantly, it should make sense!!
After teaching for 12 years, I decided to step away from the classroom in order to spend more time with my own two kids. I taught in both Rochester City and Brighton, with kids in grades 7-12. Many of my students struggled in school for all different reasons. I would love the opportunity to work with you. School can be really frustrating, but it doesn't have to be. I know a few tricks to help it go more smoothly, and I'd love to share them with you!

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I won the Outstanding Poetry award in my Highschool in 2008, and later won the Creative Writing: Poetry award at Rochester institute of technology in 2013. I took several creative writing classes while obtaining my BS, including Poetry Workshop classes.

When it comes to language, I believe that people tend to learn best by doing. I also believe wholeheartedly that successfully learning a language depends on your exposure to that language. Continuous exposure to any language can help language acquisition. For English, regardless of what specifically the student is struggling with, consistent reading and writing practice is key. With a manual language like ASL, practicing signing skills and receptive skills is invaluable. Finally, I believe that people learn better when their strengths are pointed out and highlighted rather than their weaknesses. Many students who struggle in school are caught in a perpetual cycle of perceived failures. Optimism, unwavering support, and excitement are key when working with any student.
I have always had a passion for learning. Part of my passion includes helping others learn, grow, and succe ... read more

My teaching style.... depends on the day, depends on the students, depends on the topic. One minute I can be dancing around the room and the next we're having a more serious discussion. My expectations are very high and I always push my students to do "just a bit better" than they think they can at that moment. At the end of the day, a lot of "just a bit better"'s add up to a whole lot! I wholeheartedly believe that each student has a potential that is limited only to their current experience--giving them new opportunities and showing them not only what they can do but what the world has to offer them... this can change a kid's life!

Teaching is the business of taking a student from one place to another. I begin with an individual assessment that takes account of the student’s perception of the problem and the academic goals he/she needs to meet. Then, having determined what it is reasonable to accomplish, I work through repetitive assignments and increasingly complex examples to raise the student’s standard of satisfaction and equip him/her with the critical skills necessary to recognize where his work succeeds and where it does not. My approach is interactive and designed to satisfy the student’s aspiration for independent achievement and confident self-assessment.

More About This Tutor...

My teaching experience ranges from serving as a special education itinerant teacher (SEIT) for young children with special needs to teaching high school English. I am certified in PreK-6 elementary education, English, and special education. While I spent the majority of my teaching career bolstering language skills, specifically reading comprehension and writing, I also taught algebra and biology to high school students as a resource room teacher. Equipped with improved study skills, students have strategies that make them more successful in understanding more sophisticated content.
All children and adolescents can successfully acquire and process new information. Many students encounter difficulty learning in a traditional school setting because the large class sizes do not afford the teacher the time to learn about each individual and attend to his or her specific needs. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching students who are willing to learn. You don't have to love to write as much as I do, but it's my hope that I can make it a little easier for you. I am very structured, but only so that it's easier to understand how to write. I will make many suggestions about what I believe needs to be done in order to improve your work. Whether or not you make those changes is your choice. Your words are YOUR words. I would never assume my thoughts into your work. I am very easy-going but also hard-working and driven at the same time. I don't want my time wasted, and I don't want to waste yours. I hope to be able to make a difference in your education and make the process of receiving extra help rewarding.

If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

• As a NESCAC undergraduate, I explored many areas of study. In addition to earning a BA in English and American Literature while completing a minor in African Studies, I also became fluent in French through study, travel, and teaching. My first teaching experiences were in high school, when I choreographed musicals and tutored a young Chinese boy in English. In college, I co-instructed a drum circle. Finally, this past summer I worked as a Residential Advisor at the Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy. In this position I was an academic advisor, a social mediator, and a confidante. In addition to formal tutoring, my strong writing skills have attracted peers in need of a second opinion on their work since high school.
As someone who was enthralled with literature and learning at a young age, I truly enjoy guiding young people through their learning processes. I believe that every ... read more

I enjoy teaching and working with all children. I have worked with preschool to grade 5. I am a strong believer of differentiation which incorporates various learning styles and truly meeting the needs of each individual child. All students learn in various ways and each child's education must be tailored to their learning style. I believe all children can be successful if given the right tools and environment. One on one learning creates the most powerful combination for student success and achievement. My goal for my future career in education is focused on how I can make a difference in my students' academic and personal lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have 23 years as a public school teacher in Rochester, NY. I hold a MS in Education in Secondary Social Studies, and a BA in Communications/Journalism. I am very familiar with the New York State Education Department's requirements in the areas of Social Studies and English Language Arts. My grammar and organizational skills are very strong, and I am an excellent writer and editor. The majority of my teaching has been in the area of Secondary Social Studies.
I believe strongly that any student can be inspired to embrace learning. I have found that meeting students where they are at (academic level) is most crucial to inspiring learning. In additional, centering teaching around specific student needs is equally important. This is a challenge when students feel pressured to pass tests, but it can be done! I embrace an inquiry-based model of teaching/learning.

Since April 2007, I have been a substitute teacher at both the Watkins Glen High School and Middle School. Frequent subjects include English, Psychology, and Physical Education. I belong to a writers group which meets at the local library every first and third monday. I belong to a chess club that meets at a coffee shop every Thursday. I also assistant coach varsity and college soccer during the spring and fall seasons.
I believe that education should present as much material to the student as possible, which includes using various textbooks, lecture, and inquiry. After that, it will be up to the student to assess and construct the information given in order to form his/her own opinion about the subject matter. True education and learning is ownership of the subject matter which comes through effort and discipline and a little bit of guidance.
