Chess coach/tutor available (most subjects) - Cleveland West

I learned how to play chess about twenty years ago, it's been rather on and off since then. I've steadily improved and tried so many different ways to improve before finding the right method for myself that I'm confident in my many approaches to teaching. As far as other subjects, I graduated high school with honors back in 2003 with a 3.8 GPA, and scored a composite 30 on the ACT. I was awarded the Presidential Scholarship from Baldwin-Wallace, went there for a year, didn't like the school at all (should have researched it more...) So we have those life lesson bits too I suppose. Anyway, pretty much any subject is a go... obviously let me know details beforehand so I can brush up on things if necessary!
I employ a personalized teaching style, very interactive. Instead of just answering a question or stating why something is the way it is, we'll work it out so there is real underst ... read more

I am a recent college graduate and I am looking for employment within my field. I have two years experience tutoring an elementary student. I worked with a student in second grade and tutored her in both Math and English. Because her mother and I communicated regularly, she was able to tell me of improvements and areas of subjects that needed more attention. I am very enthusiastic about being able to work with students of any age. As a recent college graduate, I feel that I will be able to relate and connect with all ages of students. I enjoy being in a learning environment and I enjoy the company of other people.
Because I enjoy the learning environment and have been in one for 16 years, I have learned much about it. Everyone learns differently, and I feel that it is important to understand the student's easiest way to learn in order to proceed. I believe offering students the ... read more

I fully love my architecture career, but I have never lost my love for math and science! Every day I use basic math, geometry, and even physics (to calculate structural components). I am forced to design creative solutions and think outside the box. I hold a 4 year BS and a 5 year Bachelor of Architecture, and I have tutored on and off over the years. I have also taught Sunday School for the last 3 years, which has increased my ability to explain complicated issues in simple, understandable, and relevant ways.
There is a way to reach every child. It is my responsibility to figure out how an individual child learns best, and then use it to show him learing is fun! I enjoy challenging a child to think - to think more creativly, tieing together concepts to gain understanding. I have a B.S. degree in Information Systems with over 30 years experience in the computer industry. I have 9 children which are home schooled (ages 3-17). I'm a math/science guy. I have taught Junior church in the past.
I believe in learning to do things the "hard" way for math, making change, etc. Calculators are good for higher functions and after basics are learned. I try showing different ways of looking at something so the child will understand one way or another. I stress creativity and working things out for yourself as that is needed in life.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught computer science courses in business college, and I taught algebra, calculus, and statistics as a graduate student. I remain convinced of the necessity of obtaining basic math skills for success in today's world, and I spend a lot of time maintaining my own skills in math and computers. I am currently spending 8-12 hours per day, mostly programming vectors and mathematical functions as spreadsheet macros.
I try to find a common, basic level of understanding with the student and then show how a few key insights can help the student broaden her/his knowledge. In math, for example, this typically means showing how elementary concepts can be applied to simplify more complex problems, such as showing how such things as the distributive and associative properties are being used in solving equations, sometimes in a context where these things are often glossed over.

My teaching style is simply and varies from student to student. I am a visual learner, once I see an example done; I try to use what I’ve learned to solve a similar problem. Some people don't learn that way, I try to pick up on the student’s best learning style (whether it’s by doing example problems, talking them out, or guiding them through their own examples) I can focus my help to try to suit them. I’m very patient and understanding when it comes to tutoring, I understand many of the difficulties people have. Over the past two years, I have come to learn much about helping people and I realized that it’s something I enjoy very much.

My current status as a professional educator allows me to relate to the students and the material that is being presented to them in class. I am familiar with the terminology, problems, technology, and different methods the students will be seeing in their classroom. My students would describe me as enthusiastic and passionate about teaching. I believe that every student can learn math and that they can develop a deep understanding of the material. My goal as an educator is to make learning math fun and for my students to see the everyday uses for it. I believe that as a tutor I can help the students not only learn math, but to have fun doing it and for them to develop lifelong learning skills.

I strongly believe that everyone can learn Math easier if proper training and practice is provided. Students, especially those who don’t get enough attention from classroom teachers, usually lose interest with Math and this makes it even harder. The sooner we identify the need for extra help/tutoring we can easily overcome the situation and bring students back on track. My approach to teaching is to develop confidence in the students so they may guide themselves in a situation where no one is around to help them. Basically I want them to be self learners in future.
I have a Masters degree in Mathematics and a Bachelors degree in Education. I am certified to teach Integrated Mathematics to grades 7-12 by the Ohio Department of Education and have been designated as a Highly Qualified teacher. I enjoy tutoring children and adults because it makes me feel like I'm able to give a piece of what I know to someone that has trouble understanding that particular concept. I particularly enjoy working with children because they are sponges for knowledge. They understand concepts as long as one has the patience and does the hard work to help them understand. This is where I come in. I work with my student until they understand what they need to know. I teach them ways to study, learn, and understand the material in a way which they will never forget. Teaching takes time along with learning. So with time and effort, my students are successful.
During my high school years, I was able to work with a young child through his first three years of elementary school. I tutored the child through basic math, science, reading, and various school projects. I obtained invaluable teaching exper ... read more
