A Little Bit About Me...

The last four years I have tutored at risk teenagers for a NY public school district. I also tutored privately. In NY I was a substitute teacher for K-12 which gave me experience in the different subject levels pursuant to each grade. Prior to NY, I was employed by Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida where I taught both 8th grade and 9th grade classes. I currently hold a temporary certificate with Florida and am finishing my Master's. I love working with children who need a little extra support. The proud look of accomplishment children who struggle have when they succeed is very rewarding. For a student to really understand a math they need to learn the concept not just the formula. Many times this means taking the abstract and making them as concrete as possible. Every student can learn with some modifications and a little extra work.
My first teaching experience came from tutoring my own daughter who has a learning disability.This experience has taught me to see first hand the difficulties children can have learning new concepts. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe I have a good mental connection with children. Teaching Math is not just about solving problems, using specific methods, equations & formulas that the student has to memorize, and then will forget after a couple days. It's about understanding the problems, it's about knowing where the problem is, and how to solve it using basic Math knowledge and some axioms, step by step, even reinventing the answer, if possible. Teaching Spanish is a lot different, its more methodical, I use some mnemonic "tricks" for the kids & adults to remember the important words & translations.
