For 20 years I worked for Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools, as a fifth through 7th Grade classroom teacher. I taught all of the academic subjects in various combinations, sometimes all at once to a self-contained class. The State of Tennessee recognized me as "Highly Qualified" in all subjects, from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. I served on the district's math council for 5 years, helped direct the district's science fair one year, and worked extensively in the field of arts-based curriculum development. While tutoring students I have gained a better understanding of course materials because of my having to reexplain in another way for another person to understand. It is said 100% of material is retained from teaching others.
I believe in fully explaining the problem to the student or working out the problem fully. I then let the student work out the problem by him/herself and and then teaching back to me what he/she has done to get the problem right.
