Hello! My name is Kayla Bear. I am a first-year student at Purdue University; however, I am a sophomore according to my credit hours. I earned college credit in high school to get ahead of the game. I graduated from Jefferson High School in the spring of 2012. I now attend Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne. I have two younger siblings and 4 younger step-siblings that I have helped with their homework, or helped them better understand material assigned to them. Their ages range from 8-17. I know how to explain certain subjects in multiple ways to ensure that eventually the student will understand the material. I am very patient, and I understand that some people learn at slower rates than others. I am majoring in nursing, though I considered teaching English before making this decision. Students learn to write by writing (and by reading). I have used a number of different text books but I find that students learn best when writing about something that matters to them. My approach to tutoring, then, would be to find out what a student truly cares about and start from there. In addition, I would begin by taking a diagnostic writing sample in order to see what mechanical issues seemed most important to address. I would never attempt to tutor a student with some kind of formulaic, standardized regimen of study but would work my hardest to tailor tutoring sessions to the individual needs of each student.

When you learn to play the piano, first you are taught the scales, which you practice over and over and over again. Then you learn pieces of music, with specific counts and phrasing. Finally, once you have all the rules in your back pocket, you can evolve into a jazz artist who seemingly leaves the rules behind. It is the same with language. You first learn and practice the basic components – reading, vocabulary, grammar, usage, three-paragraph themes, etc. Then you find yourself able to experiment with word choice and metaphor.
