As for myself, I am definitely a visual learner, so I feel that visual aids are important. I am a big fan of hand outs in full color. You will often find me drawing a picture on the board. I have always had a deep appreciation and passion for the English language. I began reading at the age of three, and excelled in reading and grammar throughout my public school education. I strongly believe in allowing the student to learn through their own will and with their own techniques, I try to just be the vessel that allows them to get to this point. I have worked in Montessori type schools where learning is a self-discovery and a journey. I try to find a way to make the subject interesting in a specific way for the student to allow them to want to learn, and getting excited about succeeding. I studied Art History at Florida State University, which required a number of essay and extensive seminar classes, which taught me different ways to complete 10-20 page papers. I have worked teaching children in many different environments, in a preschool, Boys and Girls club, and at their homes. I elected to homeschool my three children who are now teenagers; thus I have many years of one-on-one teaching experience. I feel that some children need to be away from the stresses sometimes experienced at school in order to discover their academic gifts. An individual tutor has the luxury to get to know the student, see thier potential, and cheer them on in a way that a classroom teacher may not have the time to do. In our homeschool we have used a variety of curriculums which have most often been in a "hands-on" or experiential style. Often though, there's no getting around the fact that we have to just sit down and do the work. Since I am an artist, I naturally try to teach in a way that honors intuitive ways of learning.
