Being a tutor for grades 6-8 was different because they had the basics. They needed to be informed and focused. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. If one understands the motivation for the rules they can better anticipate how items should be handled and they are more likely to retain information.
