A Little Bit About Me...

While attending a small private university in upstate New York, I pursued a degree in Chemistry with a minor in English. I excel in all parts of the scientific discipline, receiving perfect marks in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. In addition to direct courses in Algebra and Calculus, I used mathematics on a daily basis in the upper level Chemistry courses. I received my Bachelor's degree in 1989 and worked as an assistant engineer in Binghamton NY until I started my masters program at SUNY Cortland. I have held Physics, Earth science, Chemistry and Biology appointments in the years that followed in a variety of School districts throughout the state. I have spent five years tutoring and 17 teaching, including 12 years of summer school. The best thing about teaching and tutoring science is that it easily transfers to all of the other disciplines. A Little Bit About Me...

I am flexible to include many teaching styles while working with students. I have found, however, that the best way I have learned is through experience/discovery. I prefer a hands on approach but I am patient with those that are not ready or do not prefer to learn that way. The best tutors/instructors can adjust thier teaching style to the style the student(s) prefer.

In science and math the learner has to practice much like learning to play a musical instrument. It helps if you can bring real world applications into the classroom so it is meaningful to the students otherwise they feel like they are learning something just for the cause of learning.
While completing my teaching degree I taught for three years with troubled youth. Subjects were regents level and the subject was earth science and algebra or course I as it is called in NY. I have also taught Summer school at the Allen Center in South Kortright which can be a tough crowd to work with. During my undergraduate studies I tutored chemistry and biology. I also taught 8th grade physical science in Prince George Virgina.

More About This Tutor...

I love to teach and see the ideas light up the eyes of the person who suddenly got a concept. I think teaching should be adaptable and should fit the learning style of the student. Visual tasks, memory games, and hands-on-learning are, in my opinion, the best way to help someone truly learn (versus rote memory). I think that with the right guidance and put in the right environment, anyone can learn. I look forward to being that "right guidance."
