I want you to be successful in learning!

My teaching style is mainly dependant on the person that I am tutoring. If a student needs to take a slower process to learn than I am adaptable to that. The same is true for someone who has a little faster pace. I am flexible.
I have experience with teaching adults how to read at my local literacy organization. Also, I have tutored children with Reading and Math. I was a substitute teacher for students from Pre Kindergarten through High School with different subjects and disciplines. I can freely tutor others because of the experiences that I have had while earning my degrees. Helping others learn is a passion of mine.

My comments on tutoring Social Studies : have taught every grade from 6th to 12th

I have 25 years experience in teaching from grades 6 through college; public schools; private schools; community college. My masters degree is in history. I have written one government text, several chapters of high school history texts, and economics teacher materials while working for Glencoe/ McGraw-Hill publishing. I have an Ohio professional certificate, still up to date. I am retired, but still writing for a web site.
I believe that each student learns in his or her unique way. Creativity in teaching style is necessary to find out how best to teach. I have developed many different strategies, approaches.

A Little Bit About Me...

Students learn differently, and I try to find each student’s comfort zone for learning. Some teachers may not have the chance to really analyze a student’s learning needs due to the other 30 students in the class. That is why I think I have such an impact on all my students. I am patient and easy going person and like to provide a relaxed environment for the student, which I find enables them to ask more questions and feel more confident.
My interest in mathematics and physics led me to my college program of Civil Engineering. Along the way to earning my BS in Civil Engineering, I was exposed to a broad range of mathematics and different areas of physics. I immediately noticed that I excelled in these subjects and took the opportunity to tutor others in these disciplines for two years while in college. Since graduation, I have continued tutoring mathematics and physics for ma ... read more

Positive reinforcement is the key. When a student sees that an adult is taking an honest interest in them, then they are not only more willing to learn, but more able. Telling a child "I know you can do it" instead of "you can do better than that" is imperative. Even the most tempermental or unmotivated student can be helped as long as that personal connection is there. I have always found that boosting their self-confidence, and thus reducing their stress/frustration level can work wonders. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than being able to connect with a child who has been labled "difficult" or "unwilling".

A Little Bit About Me...

The most important belief that I hold in the area of education is that all students are capable of learning. As a tutor, and prospective teacher, it is my role to determine how to reach each student. Using a multitude of techniques targetted towards a variety of learning styles, I am flexible enough to work with students of any learning style. For me, approachability and patience are the most important factors in reaching even the most resistant learners. I welcome a challenge, I am good with people, and I deeply care about working with young people to increase their reading and writing skills.

I have earned my BA in English Literature, which gave me amazing professional diversity, as well as exemplary writing skills. These skills were indispensable during my postgraduate work in Archaeology. During a five year career as a professional archaeologist I have authored many reports and presented academic papers at conferences. I have a keen awareness of how to introduce new students to complex information because I've had the opportunity to participate in teaching high school students and undergraduates about field archaeology and artifact analysis.
My teaching style is extremely dependent on the individual student, and what their particular situation calls for. As someone who struggled at the beginning of their academic career myself, I am very sensitive to such situations. I take incredible joy in learning, and I believe that any student can achieve this given the right app ... read more

My teaching style is basically Socratic, using questions/responses in order to explore and to understand the subject at hand. Active involvement by the student is important, asking "leading" questions to probe why and how certain things are the way they are. Additionally, my teaching style in writing is to start with the broad picture, then move to the details, subsequently returning to the broad picture. The final step is to be able clearly both to introduce and also to summarize the nature of subject matter. My belief is that reading with comprehension and writing is an "art" that can be rehearsed and practiced with ever greater skill.
From my early days in High School, excellence in writing has always been a top priority. Throughout my teaching career, both in High School and University, I have asked from my students nothing less than excellence in reading comprehension and ... read more

Starting in 1992, I served as an adjunct professor at Johnson & Wales University teaching a 300 level environmental science class, a 100 level general non-major biology class, and also a 100 food sanitation class with a HACCP certification. In 1999, I left and began teaching middle school where I have been since. During my time, I have taught 6-8th grade science, 6-8th grade social studies, 6th and 7th grade math, and 6th through high school credit enginering under the Project Lead the Way program. I have also taught reading skills and work with the Chinese community here in Charleston with English language.
I tend to relate more to content related teaching. As always, "hands on" and experiential learning is always better. When material and lessons can be related to the students, much better success in learning may be achieved. Many of my former students have progressed to the t ... read more

I am a recent graduate of East Tennessee State University. I have a degree in Elementary Education and a teaching license in Tennessee and South Carolina. I have worked in an after school program for 4 years with pre-school (3 years) to 6th grade. I was a substitute for 5 months for kindergarten through 12th grade. I'm energetic and like to find fun ways to teach children. I'm creative, artistic, and enthusiastic.
I have enjoyed working with children for a number of years. They are fun and truely like to learn. Watching a child actually discover what is being taught is absolutely amazing. All people learn different ways so finding fun, different activities is a great way to teach. Having patience, consistancy, and encouragement are key concepts when working with children.

As a 3.88 GPA graduate, I was very driven to achieve a high level of excellence in education. I have earned a BS in sociology minor psychology and MS in Human Services organizational Management and Leadership, which has enabled me to gain understanding in many areas of science and math. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers and laboratory reports, along with essays in many various areas of study. During the last 2 years I have tutored students in mathematics and sciences.
My teaching style is more of a Facilitator/Personal Model/Expert. Emphasizes personal nature of teaching-learning relationship; asks questions, explores options with learners; and focuses on Collaborative, Participant, Independent. I believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences.

I believe students need to be encouraged by giving them successful experiences. As a special ed. teacher I find that many of my students have experienced failure and it is my job to show them that they can learn and be successful. I believe all students are unique individuals who need a secure, caring, stimulating environment in which to grow and mature. I strive to create a safe environment that supports risk taking and invites the sharing of ideas while developing a deep love and respect for themselves and others instruction. My students know that I care about them and they respond. I love teaching and my students.

I love working with both children and adults. I think that everyone has the ability to learn ,but teaching styles need to be geared toward the individual. Some seem to learn more through doing while others from lecture. Everyone has the potential to learn just at different paces. I believe that everyone has potential and it is our job as tutors and teachers to help bring it out. There are no stupid children just lazy teachers in my opinion. Given the opportunity I believe that I can help to bring out the potential in those who are in need.
I have tutored college students while obtaining my BA and my MA in Sociology. I was given the opportunity to tutor when a number of professors asked for my help. I also helped to tutor high school students while I substitute taught. While trying to obtain my MA in Ed. I worked with 8th graders when working on my student teaching. A Little Bit About Me...

As an educator, I strive to improve the student's study habits, test taking skills and overall understanding of the subject. I am patient and encourage questions from the student. Also, I believe that "hands on" practice is the best way to really learn a subject. I like to break things down into smaller parts and let the student practice and grasp each concept instead of just showing them how to do it. Repetition is important to the learning process, so I frequently use practice problems to reinforce the daily lesson. I also like to identify the source of the problem and fix it even if I have to go back a few levels from what the student is currently learning. Although my natural style of teaching is patient and persistent, I am capable of adapting to many different styles to ensure that the student learns.
