More About This Tutor...

As an adjunct faculty instructor at the University of North Alabama, I teach students in a public speaking course through a series of class lectures, individual and group activities, live performances, examinations, and out of class assignments. I work on skills such as audience and situational analysis, research, organization, delivery, body language, and listening. My goal is to make my students more at ease with public speaking by teaching them how to be successful at it in a variety of situations. My activities and assignments are meant to challenge their critical thinking skills while improving their performance skills and help me to offer more individualized instruction. While teaching 9th grade world history in Haleyville, I covered the time period from roughly 1500 to present. I taught them about the rise out of the “dark ages” and world exploration, the Renaissance and ... read more

My comments on tutoring Writing : I have given instruction in various types of writing in a classroom setting.

I am a teacher with 7 years of classroom experience. My degree is in English, but I have taught in many other areas, including math, history, logic, and rhetoric. I have also tutored many students in grammar and writing, as well as Algebra I and II. I have been responsible for teaching books to students from American Literature (Hawthorne and Hemingway), European Literature (Dickens and Shakespeare), and World Literature (Gilgamesh and Homer).
I prefer the Socratic method of asking/answering questions and discussion, but I am more than capable of diverting to a more lecture style of teaching if that is what works with the student. I tailor my teaching style to the strengths of the student.

All children can learn, but it is my job, as a teacher, to figure out which learning style suits each particular child. Once you find that learning style, I always find that the students enjoy learning. Learning can be (and should be) enjoyed. I want my students to know that there is not just one set way of doing things. I am also a firm believer in positive reinforcement. I look for positive aspects in every student, and I praise that student for their hardwork and dedication.
I graduated Athens State University in 2005 with a BS in Elementary Education (K-6). After graduation, I became a substitute teacher for six months. In 2006 I was hired on by Decatur City Schools. With fifteen years of college-level teaching experience, I have taught numerous sections of Freshman Composition, Literature, Business Writing, and Preparatory Writing. I enjoy working with students, giving them insights into the potential rewards that await those who improve their written communication skills. With this in mind, I currently teach courses at two colleges, developing students' abilities to further their eduction--and their life success.
I enjoy engaging students with the actuality of what is expected of them in the "real world" of academic writing assignments. Often, students may struggle with grammar and mechanics fundamentals--but fail to see the larger scope of how to put an essay or research project together. I continuously aim to present students with inside track information about what teachers and professors are looking for. Along with this overview, I g ... read more

I graduated from one of the top teaching schools in the nation (according to NCATE), and have a degree in elementary and special education. I specialized in math education, but am also qualified to teach English, science, and social studies. I have worked with children as young as 2 years old and as old as 15 in a formal setting. I have helped children go from hating a subject to being successful and loving it.
I first and foremost believe that every child can learn, and I refuse to entertain any idea that says otherwise. I have found that a constructivist approach works best for most children, and I will always try this approach first. I try to make learning as hands on and relevant to the real world as possible.

I believe that activities for my classes should be student centered, authentic and focused on individual learning styles. I attempt to create an accepting environment and choose activities that connect learning to something my students know or value. I evaluate the progress of my students with varied types of ongoing positive evaluation and I integrate technology into class activities. I enjoy an active, energetic classroom much more than a sedate, quiet setting.
My professional experience has been divided almost equally between teaching and administrative jobs. I have approximately ten years of teaching experience including employment as an adjunct instructor in a college-level Intensive English Program, a business education teacher in a large public high school and a junior-high English teacher at a small Christian school. I also homeschooled my two older children during the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was educated at UAB for a degree in Political Science and English. My English and grammar skills are impecable. I also obtained an MBA from UAB though my greatest business experience was actually working as a banker for fifteen years. I have a passion for helping youth through my church and have four daughters of my own.
I believe in teaching something until I see the "light come on". I don't take their word for it that they understand it. They must demonstrate to me that they understand it by working through the most difficult problems in the area that I am instructing.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent graduate from the Athens State University English program, I am proficient in the areas of grammar, writing, and English and American literature. I have excellent grammar skills due to writing research papers and essays. I am also a freelance writer for online and local publications. During the last two years I have tutored college and high school students in English and literature.
My teaching style varies with each student. I talk with the student to determine his or her personal learning style, and then base my method on the individual student. I believe that every student is unique and I do my best to cater to his or her particular learning style to maximize his or her learning experience. I evaluate the student's strengths and weaknesses, and work to improve the areas that need improvement. I am a strong believer in positive reinforcement, and I always give ... read more

More About This Tutor...

While tutoring at my college, I received specialized training on identifying and adjusting to different learning styles. I use this knowledge to tailor each session to the needs of the individual student. To track progress, I like to set both short-term and long-term goals and create manageable steps toward reaching these goals. I also think it is important to teach students to establish general study skills so that they can make their own study plans for future courses.
For many years, education has been one of my top priorities. I graduated salutatorian of my high school class and summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences. In high school, I tutored in a local elementary school, focusing on developing students' grammar and composition skills. While in college, I tutored chemistry, biology, physics and math courses up to graduate levels.

I like the saying, “Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand.” This proverb is a brief, yet simple teaching style that I embrace. Although much of teaching is auditory, involving the student is a major key in the educational development of a child. Visual learning and hands-on approaches seem to work best for most children. Education is a process. Moving from what the learner knows to new goals is not always easy or quick. Assistance, persistence, and patience are required of the teacher to lead the student to greater knowledge and success. Instilling a greater desire to learn independently, building confidence, and developing new interests are not only by-products, but are also goals along the way.

More About This Tutor...

I love to help children learn! It is so rewarding to see the reaction of a child who suddenly understands what he has been trying to learn. I try to help my students build confidence in themselves by helping them realize that they do have the ability to learn. I want every child to know he is loved and special.
I have always wanted to be a teacher. I began tutoring while I was still in high school. I earned my BS in Elementary Education in 1980. I have tutored students of all ages in different subjects. Most of my tutoring experience has been in math and reading. I have tutored students for all sections of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam.
