I am passionate about encouraging young people to achieve and surpass their full potential academically and personally. My experience as a Young Life Leader has given me the joy of mentoring high school students for 5 years. I have taught students ranging from different levels of Gardner's Multiple Intelligences as well as varying socioeconomic status. I welcome the challenge of meeting the educational needs of individual students. I believe that all students can be successful in math and it is my desire to see them achieve that level of success to gain self-confidence. I prefer the discovery method in my teaching style because it gives students a foundation and allows them to build upon it. I strive to develop a mutual respect for all of my students because I am a firm believer that they will not care how much I know, unless they know how much I care.

I enjoy teaching children at all levels. I find that children learn at different speeds and by different means. So, to be truly effective you have to present the information to the broadest base of students and hope you address all their needs. Having a great level of flexibility in your lesson plans is need to ensure that no one student falls behind.
Over the past year, I served as an Americorps volunteer in an inner city charter school with an emphasis on character education. I worked one on one with students helping them with math, reading, and science skills. I assisted in classroom teaching of mini lessons too. I also helped with their after-school program, I also created supplemental study guides and multimedia software to help students to improve their study skills. Tutoring has been rewarding, because it has increased my interest in the field of education. Subsequently, ... read more

Math tutoring is a real delight to me. I get great satisfaction out of helping students conquer their fears and overcoming their obstacles with regards to mathematics and watching them eventually excel in this subject area. I have a very casual teaching style yet am adaptive to the student’s needs. Each and every mathematical concept can be taught in various ways. I evaluate each tutoring situation and then assess each student’s learning styles and adapt to that.
My educational background is solid with a very strong mathematical teaching base. I have been a self-employed math tutor for fourteen years working with grade levels five through twelve in addition to college level students. I am excellent at breaking things down and making them easy to remember. Relating the subject material to something the learner can understand is key. I am very patient and will take the time to learn how to help each student in the most productive way I can.
Completing a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics in less than four years took dedication and excellent study skills. So far, I have only tutored people in Calculus, and Physics, but I am comfortable with Differential Equations, Discrete Math, freshman Chemistry and Biology, and pretty much anything Computer Science related at the undergraduate level.

I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.
I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

More About This Tutor...

I have taught mathematics, statistics and technical math for 15 years. Primarily my audience has been working adults seeking to take a certification examination. In my training as a Certified Six Sigma Green Belt and Quality Engineer, I use many mathematical models, including algebra, geometry, statistics, and engineering modeling.
My teaching style is not memorization but rather practice. The best method that I found for teaching math based subjects is step by step work throughs for each problem. By taking the time to step through each math problem, the student learns the theory (Algebra, geometry, etc) as well as the solution. Just solving the problem doesn't teach them as much as understanding HOW to get the solution

More About This Tutor...

This particular position interests me because I struggled with math through middle school and understand the frustration it can create for a student. Mathematics is now my strongest subject and I chose the profession of accounting to utilize those strengths. During my time at college, I helped other students with their studies in math and business, specifically statistics and quantitative analysis. Although this teaching experience was with college level students, I have held a summer job working with 8-12 year olds for the past four years. When I finish my Master’s Degree, I may consider teaching at an institution such as CCAC because I enjoy helping others with their education.
As a result of my post-high school studies in mathematics and business, I feel I'm suited to tutor people in those subjects. Statistics, quantitative methods, and analytical methods are my strongest s ... read more

I had been a teacher for 12 years engaging in a multitude of learning styles and methodology. I spent 6 years serving as principal at all levels. I was Director of Education for two years and then served as Superintendent of Schools for two districts for a total of 15 years. During that time I never lost connection with teaching, mentoring students from all levels of education and continued to teach in the classroom at least once a week. I was an adjunct professor for two years at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania. I retired in 2009 to travel and photograph the country, while living in and RV. A Little Bit About Me...

From high school to graduate school I have enjoyed being a scholar of many disciplines. In the last year, I took it upon myself to take what I know and teach it to young enthusiastic scholars, and it has been immensely rewarding. I only have a years worth of experience in tutoring mathematics, but I have tutored students in courses as advanced as Analytic Geometry and Calculus III to early college-level courses such as College Algebra.
I have enjoyed tutoring math students who are advanced learners and students who are beginning their study of college-level math. No matter their capability, each student's success is very important to me. I have often met with students outside of tutoring sessions to explain a problem, and had e-mail conversations with several students to ensure they're understanding material. In tutoring sessions, I like making sure each student is actively pa ... read more
