I believe in presenting each child with a verbal and visual explanation of each objective. I then believe that each child needs the chance to complete a task with encouragement and success before independent work. Assessment should only be taken AFTER a child has experienced numerous chances for understanding, practice, and mastery. As a tutor, I was encouraging, supportive and sensitive to my students' feelings. For example, I normally met my students at the library. One student kept missing his initial session. I figured out that he was too intimidated by the library itself to meet me there. So, we had regular lessons in the park, where he felt comfortable and was therefore receptive to learning.
