Chess is one of my top subjects! I've been playing chess since I was 6 or 7. I know almost everything there is to know about playing the game. I can be exceptional opponent as well as an exceptional teacher.

I am a High School Senior. I attend J. A. Fair High School in Little Rock, AR. I am a social person and I am really good at interacting with others. I am not self-centered and I help people whenever I can. I like when people ask me for help because it makes me feel like I'm doing something right and that I can make a small difference if nothing else.
When I am tutoring others, I have a very hands on approach. I may offer help and hints, but I don't give away answers, I make people work for their grades. I try to make things interesting or entertaining when I'm tutoring, just so people don't get bored.

More About This Tutor...

Coming from a smaller school, I understand the importance of one on one communication and teaching. Throughout middle and high school I tutored many of my classmates and friends, and continued to do so with whoever needed help during my college career at Ozarka. After taking Writing courses at UCA, I began to see how that one on one quality becomes lost in a larger school, so I began offering help to whoever appeared to need it. My writing classes have strengthened my grammar and vocabulary skills, and I have taken a Teaching Creative Writing class, all helping me to understand the value of good communication and how to apply it.
First and foremost, I understand that no two children learn the same. I believe many children struggle in a learning environment simply because they are not comfortable with it. I excel at personal communication, and make it my first goal to find out h ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I graduated from the University of Central Arkansas with a double major in Psychology and Philosophy. I also received a minor in Interdisciplinary studies through the Honor's College at UCA. I wrote several different research papers in Psychology, excelled in critical thinking and symbolic logic courses in philosophy, and also completed an undergraduate thesis through the Honor's college. I would be able to improve any child's critical thinking and writing skills. I completed my Bachelors of Science by taking math courses my senior year and would also be able to tutor any math classes, except for calculus. I have most experience teaching 3rd and 4th graders math and science through an Environmental Education course I took during college.
I studied many different theories of learning while in psychology and fundamentally understand what it means to be a teacher. My teaching style al ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I started teaching Music in 1984. I taught part-time, temporary while pursuing education goals and working as a professional musician. In 1998 I became an adult educator, and in the following nine years I taught GED, Workforce, Computer and ESL. I learned to speak Spanish from some of my ESL students. Today I run a new program called Bachillerato de las Americas en Arkansas, comprised of curricula obtained from Kingston, Jamaica and Heredia, Costa Rica. I enjoy teaching all age levels.
I consider myself a facilitator, not an authoritarian. I ascribe to the principles set forth by Malcolm Knowels and Benjamin Bloom. I rely on the strength and motivation of the student. I hesitate to call myself "teacher." I think I serve better as a guide which, hopefully, leads his client not just to a more enlightend place, but also to the place the client wants to be, or had in mind in the fir ... read more

While enrolled in the teacher certification program with Hendrix College, I mentored/tutored an eighth grader in various subjects. I enjoyed the one-on-one experience thoroughly and quickly returned to tutoring at Arkansas School for the Blind. During my three years of employment with ASB, I improved ACTAAP reading scores of two students with reading/learning impairments after one year of tutoring sessions from Below Basic to Basic. I have tutored students in all levels of reading and literature, basic math, algebra, and the sciences.
I have a strong constructivist teaching style: I do my best to connect a student's prior knowledge and experiences to new knowledge in order to build on his or her experience, thereby creating a foundation for intrinsic learning. My reading lessons are technically rigorous, but are supplemented with frequent discussion to check for understanding. ... read more
