My comments on tutoring German : My secondary focus for me degree was German. I lived in Cologne, Germany and tutored German in college.

Very involved, active, utilizing various methods and approaches to master all aspects of a subject.
All throughout college, I tutored English, Spanish, and German, and taught ESL for the Foreign Language Department After college I completed a TEFL Certification course in Barcelona, and taught private lessons in Spain I then taught English and Spanish at a language school in Sicily, then I taught English and Italian at a language school in Montenegro. I then returned to the States and tutored in the Metro Schools of Nashville until I moved to Atlanta.

I use all methods of second language acquisition in my teaching. Most of the exercises I use to help beginning are communicative methods. It's better to get them speaking and writing and build their confidence than to just use rote memorization or drills. If I think the audio-lingual method will help a more advanced student, I suggest and practice this method with them. If reading in the language with the translation side by side helps, we will practice that. I bear all forms of cognitive learning in mind when tutoring a student. I strive to help in whatever way I can.

I find an interactive, Socratic teaching style in which I encourage the student to discover the answers on their own to understand why something works the way it does is a very effective approach for me rather than just lecturing, particularly for younger learners. I find it equally important for students to understand the why of what they are learning as well as the how and the what.
