I believe in tailoring my teaching style to individual students that I tutor. The two most important techniques I have used are translating academic concepts into everyday examples that students can readily understand and using positive reinforcement to help them towards their goals. Especially in the fields of math and science, I have found that learning by analogy and real world examples provides the surest path towards success.
Having an excellent and extensive educational track record, I feel I am well positioned to assist current students achieve their goals. I have a JD from NYU School of Law, which helped me master such skills as reading comprehension, analytical thinking and persuasive writing. Math can be fun, especially when applied to exciting applications. For my work at NASA and the MITRE Corporation I use concepts from Calculus I-II almost everyday. Inspiring students to become excited about math and science is one of my life-long goals. Step by step visual diagrams can be effective tools for describing complex ideas. From my experience as a teacher and student I have had great success creating simple graphics to accompany otherwise dense math equations for circuits, data structures and statistics. This teaching style coupled with a fresh knowledge of math material as a graduating senior make me confident that I can be an asset to your team this summer. I will be returning to my home in Connecticut May 18th and would welcome the opportunity to and discuss starting work at Advanced Learners!

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated cum laude from the University of Rhode Island with two Bachelors of Science in Marine Geology and Maritime Law. I teach sailing and environmental education in the summers. This means very little however as I aspire, one day, to become a lighthouse keeper. Sadly, few can find such a position these days. I enjoy writing, science, mathematics, literature and most all music.
When I taught sailing to young kids, I used to dress up like a pirate. I have lots of energy. I know I'm doing my job right when kids start laughing. When I taught to teenagers, I kept in mind my own experiences at that age. If I'm helping a student study hard on that big, important test that might have the ability to crush the student's soul - I bust out my acoustic guitar and sing about how It's The End of The World As We Know It (And This Test Means Very Little In The Long Run ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taught music and guitar since I was 20 years old. I continued to teach guitar throughout college where I double majored in Political Science and Theology and minored in philosophy. My grammatical skills are excellent as I currently write for two different publications on the internet. I have been tutoring for the past year in Math and Reading in all levels from 6th grade math to SAT math. I also tutor GRE math. Math and reading are certainly my strong points now as I have been working in these subjects for this past year. I am looking to expand my students though and your institution caught my eye.
I have taught with students from the age of 6 to the age of 29 in all subjects from math and reading, to philosophy and history. I am relaxed and zealous when teaching students. I have a known record at teaching my guitar students all the basic chords within 3 lessons. I a ... read more

The key to good teaching is determining the skills of each student, individualizing an instructional program to improve on those skills, and monitoring progress to improve the student's knowledge base.
I am a retired Connecticut public school educator with over 30 years of experience. I taught both English and mathematics, grades 7 through 12, for the first fourteen years of my career. I was an administrator for the remainder of my career, serving at the high school level, middle schoollevel, elementary level, and central office level. Teaching style? I tend towards an extrinsic, formal, and authoritative style. That said, I'm pretty easy to get along with, quite patient, and kinda fun. And 'formal' doesn't have to mean rigid. I will work hard to adjust and refine lesson plans to enable success in your area of study.
I currently attend graduate school at Stony Brook where I'm working towards a Master of Public Health degree. I have undergraduate degrees in Physical Therapy and Biomathematics. I am excellent with standardized test preparation, never having placed less than the 90th percentile in any standardized test. I have never been a formal tutor. Yet, essentially, I have been tutoring and aiding peers and family members since elementary school. Additionally, I have served as a Big Brother for Long Island Big Brothers Big Sisters.

I enjoy teaching, educating and mentoring students to be all they can be and excel in their coursework. I also enjoy just working with students to encourage them and show them how learning can be fun! I am a very patient and caring person who also offer mentoring and career development to students in many subjects.
