I have found that difficulties with subjects like math or physics can often be pinpointed by working with the student through the exercises which are presenting trouble. In the course of working a problem the missing (or weak) skill areas can come to light readily. If only a few specific methods or skills need work then review of these alone may be adequate to "bridge a gap" in understanding. If more thorough work is needed then a backup through the material can identify where the student became lost. A rebuilding of understanding can then be done from there. I have found that this method works well for technical subjects in which knowledge builds progressively.
