A Little Bit About Me...

I am studying Secondary Math Education at the University of Vermont. I am a senior and I have completed all of my education and math requirements for my degree. In the spring I will be student teaching in one of the local schools. Last year, I spent over 100 hours in the classroom observing and teaching. This year, I am in a middle school classroom 2 hours a week teaching math to English Language Learners. I also spend time tutoring students in the local teen centers in Burlington. Over the summer, I worked at the Montshire Museum in Norwich, VT at a summer camp teaching children about aquatic biology and how to make inventions. After I earn my degree at UVM, I am planning on becoming a high school math teacher.

My passion is making mathematics accessible. After high school I was underwhelmed by mathematics. However as I took more math in college, I realized how much I had missed in high school. As I learned more mathematics, I became determined to make it my business to find and implement better methods of educating people on mathematics in a way that does not overwhelm them, but simultaneously makes their learning experience more useful. I have a knack for creating analogies and mechanisms to help students remember things for exams, as well as strategies and ways of thinking that may be a little different than what was taught in class (but still gets them to the final result). I really want to help kids succeed in school and be in charge of their learning even after I am no longer their tutor. I like to inspire them to learn.
As an undergraduate at MIT, I have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, and have complete master of those taught at the high school level. I've had a deep enthusiasm for mathematics and physics since an early age, when my father, a professor of physics at Dartmouth College, introduced me to the beauty and elegance of the principles underlying these fields. I think that teachers need to be flexible, and be willing to adapt their teaching style to suit the needs of their students. This is especially true for tutors who are often involved in a one-on-one relationship with those they tutor. I'm patient and respectful of the difficulties students have with expressing their thoughts in words. It's not unusual that they get frustrated trying to fit them into what can seem like a formal and obstuctive grammatical framework. Math is also a subject with which people often have difficulty.
