A Little Bit About Me...

I am the author of five historical novels and a number of articles, poems and short stories. I occasionally do short “residences” teaching Language Arts and Drama to special needs students in k-12 schools for VSA Arts of Florida. My graduate studies emphasized American and Tudor/Stuart History. My doctorate included a Criminal Justice minor. I regularly teach writing and grant writing seminars to adults, usually through libraries on weekends or in the evening.
I believe everyone will respond well to individualized instruction when the tutor studies the student's learning style and offers the information in the form best suited to each learner. The most rewarding moment in my teaching career involved Emily, a college student who suffered an injury, leaving her with severe short term memory problems. She had great difficulty learning new math concepts. We could work on the same, problem over and over again and she wouldn’t remember completing it once, let alone a dozen times. I learned that word-for-word repetition was the best way to move ideas from Emily’s short term memory to her long term memory. My mother is a reading development teacher. She works with Title 1 children every day in her job. Before coming to college, I volunteered over 100 hours working with a Title 1 child on her reading, writing, and math skills. She was in the third grade for the second time that year, and by no means can I take credit for the fact that she went on to pass that year, but I do believe I helped her by understanding her difficulties, working with her as someone who was interested in seeing her succeed. In the past two years I have learned that one set teaching style does not work for everyone. I feel it is important to first figure out how the individual learns most effective, and then gear my teaching style around their strengths. Though some methods may change I do believe some main points are very important. A student needs to do the work they are assigned, whether it is from their teacher or me as a tutor. Students who do not do their work are severely hurting themselves. Also, I believe that students will learn best from questions that they develop themselves.
