I began college as an engineering major, so I have background in advanced mathematics and physics. I went on to change my major to psychology where I gained knowlege of social and behavioral sciences, as well as research technologies and statistical analysis. Since graduating college with a B.A. in psychology, I have worked as a psychology researcher, accounting assistant, and in 3 different roles for an international pharmaceutical company. Through my job experience, I have gained knowledge in different business disciplines and areas such as Lean/Six Sigma and Supply Chain/Logistics planning. I love teaching all ages and skill levels. I adjust my teaching style to the individual - some people are visual learners or oral learners or hands-on learners. Science has always been very fascinating to me and I love to share what I have learned in the sciences. I think that it is important that all students have a good grasp of biology, chemistry and math to ensure a good understanding of how the earth works. I believe in problem-based tutoring for algebra, and construct problems based on the textbook problems whenever possible. I let the student try the problem first, watching closely for any mistakes, and then teach the rules as necessary, and summarize mistakes after each set of problems. However, I can also teach all the rules beforehand if a student has been absent from class. For chemistry, I reviewed class notes with students and then explained the fundamentals whenever there was a question, and then did practice problems with the students. I have two years of tutoring experience in college chemistry with the University Learning Center at Penn State. I tutored over twenty students in college chemistry. I am currently tutoring and mentoring a student in High School algerbra and chemistry for free.

I work hard at leading students to figure things out for themselves. But if they get too frustrated, I will spell things out more in detail. I draw a lot of pictures, but have learned that not all students find this helpful. So I try to present mathematics several ways: with numbers, with pictures, with symbols. After earning my doctorate in math in 1966, I began teaching at the University of Massachusetts as an assistant professor of math.
