A Little Bit About Me...

My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. Creating a reason and success in learning, making it practical and fun can lead any child to want to continue to grow in any area of interest, and tie that back to other skills which my not be so appealing at this point in their life.

As the first in my family to earn a university degree, I have a strong connection with students of all ages who need educational support. I have more than 20 years of experience teaching English and writing to a diverse range of learners from middle school and high school to PhD research students. While working full-time, I have earned a BS in English Education, MA in English/Non-fiction Writing, and a PhD in English/Writing so I understand the demands students must juggle as they try to educate themselves. I have worked in both industry and government working on a worldwide basis with people of varying cultural backgrounds. I have traveled extensively in my profession. Over the last several years I have been involved with several business and working extensively with the Native American pueblo communities. In terms of tutoring, teaching, or mentoring I have worked with children of all ages in reading and math tutoring principally as a volunteer. Professionally, my work has been in mentoring young adults and technical training.
In teaching I am basically a generalist and humanist. My background is in mathematics and the sciences, but with a solid foundation in the humanities.
