A Little Bit About Me...

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting. I have very strong math skills, especially in Algebra, which is what my daughter is learning now. I excelled in grammar, art, health, and science as well. I was a teacher at a private school for a year after college before I started a family and began home schooling. My daughter is now in the 8th grade and tests at the college level in reading and high school levels at most other subjects.
I have a daughter in the 8th grade and a son in the 6th. I have home schooled them the past 9 years. They have very different learning styles which has helped me to learn to teach in different ways to accommodate their needs. I am patient and easy going and I love helping kids.

I believe that learning comes from a good rapport between teacher and student. I like to make students feel at ease, and then progress is achieved in the context of a safe learning environment. Rather than taking an authoritarian approach, I prefer to act as a kindly mentor and facilitator of students' learning processes. Learning is a voyage of discovery; my role is to show students how to set foot upon that road. However, I believe in setting high standards for student achievement.
Although my degree and early experience is in journalism, I have spent 16 years teaching middle school English. During that time I taught English Language Arts, Journalism, and TV Production. I have always nurtured a love for English literature, both in myself and in my students. In addition, my experience as a reporter and freelance writer gives me deeper insight into the artistry of written English.

While pursuing a double major during my undergraduate years at the University of Notre Dame, I served as a university tutor, helping students in chemistry, communications, English and Spanish.
