Not every method works for every child; with one exception, patience. I demonstrate and exemplify patience. If a child feels as though they are in an atmosphere where they are safe, free of ridicule and bias, then they are willing to perform. This process can be a give take scenario however. So, some flexibility is required as well, but eventually the student will become more comfortable with themselves and confident in what they are capable of.

My teaching style is simple. I start with the basics, then build on that each time I meet with the student. In addition, it is critical that the tutor is doing age-appropriate practice exercises with the student. In addition, there has to be a lot of variety. Students do get bored. I don't like to constantly use a worksheet. I would prefer to enhance the lesson with some hands-on activities, or games. It really makes a difference, especially with the younger students. I also believe in review, review, review. I don't want to move on unless I feel confident that the student has mastered the concept.

A Little Bit About Me...

Because of my experience in teaching my own children, I have discovered that no child is too young to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four. My teaching style is to engage the student on a personal level through cheerful conversation and sharing of interests, then to assess learning styles, strengths, and challenges.
