Recently Retired Female Engineer

I would classify my tutoring style as "old school." Ladies and gentlemen, the best way to learn a problem-based subject such as math or chemistry is to solve problems; there are no short cuts.
I am a recently retired engineer. I spent last summer working in a City of Detroit grade school as a tutor. About ten years ago I taught Environmental Science classes at Wayne State as an adjunct faculty. This is the only official experience I have had teaching/tutoring; however during my academic career I frequently explained course material to fellow students and to study partners. During the 30 years I worked as a Chemist and as an Engineer I was frequently asked to explain technical information to a lay audience since I seemed to have a knack for doing just that.

I believe in teaching to understanding. I try to guide the student through the process in question in ways that facilitate understanding rather than simply copying steps to get an answer. I beleive that the material must be taught in ways that are relevent to the student. Every subject learned has value, if for no other reason, because learning that subject trains your brain to think in a different way. The more ways we can think, the more flexible and adaptable we become and the easier it is to adjust to the demands of education and lif.
