For most students, essays are their number one issue. After they have told me their concerns, I like to read over the paper myself and any correct grammar mistakes I find along the way. I also sometimes write in comments in the margin to refer back to. If I have an issue or am confused about a certain session, I stop and ask the student. I also often read the sentence(s) aloud so the student can hear the what is wrong. If he or she still does not see an issue, I explain my concerns and we work together until we are both happy. After I’m done reading, I express any more concerns I have and once again work with the student until we are both happy. I also help with work cited pages. My teaching style is a delicate balance of content knowledge, compassion, and flexibility. Obviously, an effective teacher should have a great understand of his or her content area, but knowing how to teach and share that knowledge is the key to an outstanding teacher. I do not see students are not robots that all process information the same, so having the compassion to see each student as an individual with different ways of processing information drives my teaching. I take the time to know and care about my students in order to be able to adjust material to meet the needs of the students as well as the standards. The last component I incorporate is flexibility. In groups, I like to have many examples and participation from the audience. As a manager and mentor, I also prefer to teach a concept and return to it when the student has an opportunity to use it in their work. It is important to be able to adjust your teaching style to the needs of the student, and I love the challenge of being able to do this.
I have always loved to learn new things, and as a teenager wanted to be a teacher. I have a B.S. in Dietetics with a chemistry minor, as well as an M.B.A. My role as a dietitian requires the ability to teach all ages groups, with diverse backgrounds and educational levels. After completion of my MBA, I moved into a senior leadership role. Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution. A student's practical demonstration of problem solving is the best gauge to determine if that student is indeed learning or not.
