My comments on tutoring Journalism : I am NYS certified in Literacy (grades 5-12) and English (grades 7-12), although I have several years of experience with children as young as Kindergarten.

Holding active NYS certifications in both English and Literacy has had a tremendous impact on the way I teach. I find myself much better able to engage struggling students. Quite often, particularly when it comes to reading, it is the lack of basic comprehension skills that prevent students from being able to fully engage with a text and to perform critical thinking tasks. My experience in diagnosing and instructing students at various stages and abilities of literacy acquisition has helped me garner a talent for overcoming this challenge, and propelling students into higher order thinking.
As an educator, I view myself not as a provider of knowledge, but rather as a facilitator. A Little Bit About Me...

I will fit my teaching to the client. If a student learns with visuals, I will use visuals. If a student is an aural learner, I will cater to that side. I am very flexible and take direction very well. I have taken a year or more of each language I am qualified to tutor. The languages are Italian, French, German, Spanish and Latin. I also lived in Italy for a couple of months, in the Northern region. So I have real world experience speaking the language.
I have recently graduated from Purchase College with an Undergraduate degree in Music with a minor in English. During School I tutored students in English composition and edited students essays and papers during the entirety of my undergraduate education. I was then offered an amazing opportunity to bring a non-profit pre-school and daycare back to fruition which I accomplished in under a year. During a span of 20 years as reporter, sports writer, copy editor, section editor and editor-in-chief, I trained many new hires -- and even a few veterans -- in spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension of written material and in writing. I did not take graduate classes, but I did take the Graduate Record Exam. I scored in the upper 15% in both Verbal and Essay. I do not consider myself a classically trained scholar or academic. I went through a rigorous program in English Composition where I received my MA. Prior to that, I had several years of teaching experience as both a high school/middle school English and Social Studies. Later I taught 4 years of College English. Then I spent a couple of more years teaching high school English, in addition to spending one year tutoring students in SAT/Regents instruction. My particular passion is helping students generate, organize, develop, revise and edit their writing.
I believe in developing a rapport with students, treating them as equals in the learning process. I have skills and knowledge that students can access, freely providing them with the information they need to be successful.
