A Little Bit About Me...

At our first session, I ask that each student complete a short quiz to determine their learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc). Every child learns differently and I believe that discovering what works best for each student is the first step towards success. Once we figure out what his/her learning style is, I cater to this. If they learn best by reading, I'll prepare worksheets based on what they're learning; if they're hands-on learners, I'll make an activity.
My experience with tutoring began in high school, when I started assisting elementary students with homework through one of my clubs. A Little Bit About Me...

Ever since graduating from college and moving to Chicago I make time during my week to volunteer at the Chicago Temple in the Loop to help a child develop reading and comprehension skills in the English language. I invent creative ways and use the scientific method to engage my tutee with learning, such as on one occasion, while reading a literary work by Cuban poet Jose Marti, both the student and I individually drew pictures and diagrams as a way of interpreting the poem, and later shared our ideas with each other.

As I mentioned, I have 3 younger siblings-I've been helping with homework forever, and I understand the frustrations that naturally occur when concepts seem elusive. Additionally, I am completely aware that I'm not perfect; I've taken a lot of upper level, difficult courses, and know what it's like to have trouble, sometimes with the easiest concepts. However, consistent interactions with a teacher helped me to find success in so many gruesome classes (Advanced Computational Biology, anyone?). I have a simple teaching style. I teach according to the students needs. I try to get a sense of how the student learns best and let them direct me to what they need.
