At our first session, I ask that each student complete a short quiz to determine their learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc). Every child learns differently and I believe that discovering what works best for each student is the first step towards success. Once we figure out what his/her learning style is, I cater to this. If they learn best by reading, I'll prepare worksheets based on what they're learning; if they're hands-on learners, I'll make an activity. My experience with tutoring began in high school, when I started assisting elementary students with homework through one of my clubs. I have 15 years experience in the lab. My educational requirements to be a med tech means I have taken many science and biology classes. I have had oppotunities to subsitute teach at my childrens' school and really enjoyed the experience. I believe that teaching styles need to be flexible to the student. I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from the severely limited autistic youth to the highly gifted medical student. While approach and focus might vary for the individual or subject matter the essence remains the same. I have worked in biology for over 10 years, and have a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Western Michigan University. I have taught 250+ college level students in lecture, labs, and in more informal classroom and research settings, and have also worked with children of all ages in nature programs.
