I have my degree in Elementary Education. I have had experience teaching large class sizes, but I have also spent a lot of time in small group reading instruction, and I have worked in small group math. I tutored a kindergarten girl to improve her phonemic awareness. I tutored Language Arts in elementary school after school hours. I worked at a day care for 5 years and helped students with their homework after school. I believe in meeting students at their level of need, and mastering the skills needed in order to move onto higher level skills. I believe in teaching students how to develop their critical thinking skills, and teaching them the concepts needed to succeed in school and life.

Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. I have done student teaching at the high school level in Math, specifically, Geometry and Trigonometry. I created innovative new ways to use the materials on hand to reawaken students' natural mathematical curiosity and to exemplify the concepts of the courses. I have done one semester of long term substitute work in which I taught underprivileged children Physics and Physical Science. I had to design the curriculum from the ground up because they had rotating substitutes before I took over. Beyond that, I have taught numerous and varied college labs and recitations in the UNC physics department, and I have tutored for those same classes. Having grown up with a brother with a learning dissability, I was inspired to persue a degree in which I could assist people be successful and realize their potential. I've achieved a BS in Education, and obtained a license to teach special education grades K-12 in the state of North Carolina. I've tutored students in grammar, reading comprehension, writing, and Algebra I. My teaching style is geared towards the needs of each student. I try to make things as fun as possible, and I try to help the student understand by putting the subject in a way that suits their interests. I like to joke around with the students, because it puts them at ease, and it develops a relationship with them that is hard to come by. Without that relationship, the teaching is harder, and the learning is harder. I still get the curriculum across, but in a way that the student understands. I have taught all levels of high school English and all types of academic achievement within those levels. I am currently a middle school teacher. I have worked with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) as well. I have worked with students either one on one or via the whole class to improve reading, writing, and test-taking skills.
