I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. I have a deep passion for the sciences so my bachelor’s degree in biology was a natural fit. I discovered while working in a graduate program that I also love to teach. I had the opportunity to teach real world science to high school students, which I enjoyed immensely. I learned a lot about different teaching styles and took a course in inquiry learning. I taught the college freshmen biology labs at my graduate school and I have mentored high school and college students in several laboratories I have worked in. I recently designed and implemented a hands-on science field trip for the pre-K classes at my daughter’s school. I very much enjoyed the challenge of explaining complicated scientific concepts to very young children.
While biology has remained my main passion, I have learned that a good understanding of all subjects is necessary to succeed in academics. A scientist cannot r ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In the past, my classes have lasted up to three hours at a time. Thus, I have been forced to implement new methodologies in order to not only keep my students focused and interested, but continually learning as well. I incorporate fun activities such as creative writing and music into my lessons while still closely following the curriculum. I believe that education can be both entertaining and beneficial, just as I believe that all students are capable of reaching new heights of academic excellence. All it takes is a little bit of patience and creativity on both sides, the teacher and the student, to have an unforgettable experience.
I have two English-related degrees from the University of Miami, Print Journalism and Creative Writing (Poetry Focus). Since graduating in 2005, I have worked as a teacher in South Korea, Miami Beach, FL, and here in the greater Pensacola area. My clas ... read more

College students are difficult to work with because they think they know it all. This was a blessing in disguise because it taught me not only to learn different ways to tutor a student, but also to figure out through body language and little signals as to whether or not they were actually comprehending the information. Teaching is not just giving information and hoping they retain it. My teaching style consists of teaching, asking questions to ensure they know or understand the material, and exercising hands-on work and examples to ensure the student can apply what they have learned.

Tutoring and teaching have always come quite naturally; the ability to see the struggle from the student's perspective, and recognizing the demand for creative explanations to old problems, are the core of my now developed skills as an educator. I have volunteered in Title 1 classrooms in St. Louis through Teach for America and have been assisting high school students for standardized tests for the last 5 years. My education in University has presented incredible context for my early education, giving it new life and understanding; the "whys" all make sense. My education has also demonstrated the need for understanding, as opposed to mere memorization.
There are many buzz words and phrases applied to teachers and teaching styles. While I perfectly respect all of these new theories and methods of both teaching and learning, it must not be forgotten that each student is unique in the ... read more

I have taught in many environments under many circumstances. My work as a geometry tutor for a 10th grade enabled me to learn to explore teaching methods that best suited him. As a TA, I reviewed concepts that helped reiterate important biological facts. Because my boss was a Biology Education specialist, she taught us teaching methods like hands-on activities and an inquisitive teaching style that makes concepts stick. For outreach, I acted as a museum docent to groups of students (K-12), catering each exhibit to the age level of each group. I also worked as a science summer camp counselor. These experiences have enabled me to learn my own teaching style and understand the best methods for each age group, kids to young adults.

My teaching style is relaxed, but consistent and firm. I expect assignments to be completed and timely, and spend the time with the student instructing and revising. I ask that parents are a part of the experience. I like to communicate with the family frequently so that they are aware of the assigned tasks and they can make me aware of the student's feelings and needs. It is my opinion that when the family, the teacher/tutor and the student are working together toward a given set of goals and objectives the growth is expedited.
