I am firm, fair, and friendly. I adapt lessons to the student's learning style, bearing in mind what the student needs for success in the classroom. I make learning fun. In 2000 I volunteered in the local high school's journalism class because of my passion for writing. The following year I was offered a position as yearbook adviser, and I further developed my skills with high school students. Since 2004 I have been a private tutor, teaching all elementary subjects as well as most middle school and high school curriculum. In 2005 I began teaching annual writing workshops at Simpson College for 6th - 12th grade students. In 2006 I attended substitute teacher training, and I began substitute teaching in 2009. I also had the privilege of instructing college students in a Volunteer Income Tax site this year.

My formal education includes a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degeee in mass communications, both from Drake University in Des Moines. Professionally, I have written for daily newspapers and for the public relations and marketing efforts of major Iowa corporations. I am patient, easy going and considerate. I understand that students learn in different ways, so I try to adapt my style accordingly. For example, perhaps one student learns best from oral instruction, while another prefers hands-on experience. My goal is to shape my teaching approach to best fit the needs of the student.
