I'm a firm believer that all children are different, yet, all are capable of learning. It is the responsibility of the teacher/tutor to identify the specific learning style of the students they are responsible for. Once this has been established, there should be a lot of motivation from both, teacher/tutor and the student. I practice one-on-one and hands-on strategies with students so that they may feel at ease, and to relax as they learn, and then I gradually allow them to become more engaged on their own. My involvement in a Tutor/Mentor program at an international high school was an experience that was invaluable. What I learned is that education becomes a form of symbiosis. While I taught students how to peer review drafts, articulate ideas, pronounce words, read books; they actually taught me little bit about my own customs, values and beliefs, being an ‘American’ student. It is through teaching others that I learned how I taught myself. As a result of this epiphany, I am propelled to make a career out of a similar role, the role I had as a tutor, mentor, role model, and friend.
