I enjoy tutoring those who are in Middle School or High school. I feel as though they tend to have a higher capacity for sustaining attention. Those are unique ages that can really build a foundation for later education. I believe that one-on-one time is essential in learning. Some people might learn well in a large group, but others learn much better when time is spent on explaing specific details. I find the most enjoyment when a tutee finally links the core concept and is able to solve more difficult problems on their own.

I earned my degrees in education from Ball State University. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a Kindergarten Endorsement, M.A.E. degree, and a Master of Arts degree in Special Education with minors in the following: Learning Disabilities, Mildly Mentally Handicapped, Seriously Emotionally Handicapped. I have taught at the elementary level in both general education classes and special education classes and at the high school level in special education classes.

A Little Bit About Me...

To give you some background, I graduated from Purdue University, Fort Wayne with a degree in biology and chemistry. I subsequently accepted a position with the Allen County Department of Health as an Environmental Health Specialist. In this position, I routinely inspect restaurants and markets in the Allen County Area. One of the most fulfilling aspects of my current position is the opportunity to utilize my science background and to educate the community on food-safety issues.
It has been a passion of mine to teach. I believe the biology and chemistry coursework necessary for my degree, would be of great benefit. Every child learns in different ways, I will assess what ability level each child learns at; and tutor to each child's needs.

I usually employ a Socratic style of interaction, seldom answering students’ questions, but rather guiding them to the answer, or at least an answer, through strategic questions designed to clarify their thinking processes and work toward a solution to the problem at hand. Frequently, I might not know the specific answer to a question, and in such instances, the student and I will engage in an academic scavenger hunt to find it. This practice contains much value, as the student will learn the techniques and strategies by which to effectively ferret out material that may otherwise go unnoticed. I have experience in every level of student. My first degree (A.S.) was in Engineering and I worked at higher level math, including a college Teacher's Assistant in Calculus.
