I like to get a sense of what the student already knows and try to build on that knowledge.
I have tutored on a volunteer basis with the Holyoke Tutor/Mentor Program for more than a year. I have also tutored privately. My experience has been with adults, however, I would like to add experience working with secondary school students. My comments on tutoring Trigonometry : I took Honors Algebra II/Trigonometry in tenth grade and earned an A+ for my hard work. I even scored a perfect 116 on the final exam. I continued using trigonometry in advanced calculus so I mastered the basics in this course as they were common knowledge in Calculus.

I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.
Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.

Tutor specializing in Math, Chemistry, and Physics

I have 8+ years of tutoring experience. My experience includes working with 8th graders, high schoolers, college kids, and adults. I've tutored from algebra I to precalculus, and have lots of experience tutor chemistry and physics as well. All of my students have shown improvement gradewise and had a better understanding. My goal is to give the student a solid base so that in the future, they don't need a tutor anymore. Problem-solving/self help is what I try to teach every student along with the actual material covered.
I am very patient and can explain every topic a number of different ways. Whether something needs to be proven numerically or with a picture, I can cater the right style to the student.

I stress teaching fundamental principles through an interactive teaching style where students actively participate in learning and solving problems. It is important that students understand fundamental concepts. Relying solely on rote memorization of facts will not lead to success science and math. For younger students I use hands-on demonstrations and visual aids as tools to teach basic scientific principles in a fun and active environment. For more advanced students I teach how to apply fundamental principles to solve problems. I work through typical example problems with them to illustrate practical application of principles. I then ask students to solve problems themselves to develop and ensure understanding.

In 2009, I received my Bachelor of Science in General Biology. It is my belief that most students that seek out the extra help of a tutor have a much greater capacity to learn than they realize. It is upon that belief that all of my tutoring is centered around. My long term goal for most students is to show them how to be self-learners so that at some point they tell me to stop coming because they don't need a tutor anymore. This is done primarily by weaving study skills and tips into the lessons. This helps the students be more efficient with their studying. I also spend a lot of time de-mystifying the subject material. This makes the material easier to understand, which in turn improves the student's self-confidence, which in turn makes the next set of material easier for the student to learn. It becomes a never-ending upward spiral that eventually leads to the student being successful on his/her own without the need to rely on constant extra help ... read more

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. But I like to show that indeed, they use it all the time and that it can be fun. Learning should not only be effective, but enjoyable as well.
At my Ivy League college, we were taught not just facts, but how to learn. This invaluable skill has stood me well and put me in an excellent position to teach. I have continued ... read more
