My comments on tutoring Latin : I have been studying and tutoring Latin for more than 7 years, and I am studying it as a graduate student in US.

I like to use a communicative way of teaching: I use songs, videos, games to teach the language to my students, and I believe that is really important for them to hear me talk in my own language. For Latin I usually try to teach the grammar first and to make the student think about the words we have to translate.
I am an Italian Professor in College in the Boston area. I am 27 years old and I have been tutoring Italian and Latin for 7 years and I really enjoyed it. I have a very nice relationship with my students but I like to work hard with them. My mission here is to spread my beautiful language and culture in US!

In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material yet to come.

As an Engineering major I tutored students in Math for 2 years to pay for my education. At the University level I have taught undergraduates at George Washington University in Basic Circuits Theory and Electrical Labs for 3 semesters. At the University level I have taught undergraduates at George Washington University in Basic Circuits Theory and Electrical Labs for 3 semesters.
My teaching style is to review the fundamentals. If I find deficiencies, I address these first. I then introduce the subject core using applications that the student can relate to. I get students to participate in solving problems by working through the steps in turn. I keep track of student preparation for accreditation by giving home work assignments. ... read more

I have not yet become a classroom teacher. I have already applied to summer school programs throughout the state. As a coach, I feel that it is essential to inspire students/my student athletes. If you can ingite a desire to learn in students, I believe everything falls into place after that. I enjoy placing my student athletes into small groups to discuss for certain periods of time, and then I like to spend the rest of the time talking to them as a whole. After every session I coach, I have my student athletes write me a note after every lesson explaining to me what they have learned. I believe this is imperative, to make sure that the student learns and understands something new every single day. My goal is for students to enjoy their time throughout the learning process, meet their fellow peers, and work as a unit to try and understand the material at hand.

Whether I am helping a student with prioritizing assignments, studying for tests, teaching study skills, or guiding him or her process of writing papers, I strive to promote metacognitive awareness throughout the tutoring experience. A Little Bit About Me...

In my lessons, I provide tremendous patience, enthusiasm, and positive reinforcement. I accent upon the latter because students often feel a lack of control whilst learning foreign languages. I strongly believe that staying positive, constantly encouraging and challenging them is essential for best results. Likewise during my thorough tutorials, I incorporate humour and useful mnemonic devices to make the learning process as fun as possible. It is through years of teaching that I have gained a stronger understanding of students from various cultural and learning backgrounds thereby instilling me with methods of adapting to each student's specific goals.

If a child, an adult or a teenager doesn't like you, it will be difficult (impossible?) to have him (her) learn from you. Unless you are very strong and I am "nice": I don't like to be rude. So I would need to be appreciated in order to teach. That is why I focus when available on student that chose literature or that want to learn, not the one the parents force to learn. Then I am trying to make what sounds reluctant easy, attractive...
I worked also with Après la classe (“after classroom”) – 16, rue Commines BP 3003 75121 Paris Cedex 3 – as a tutor from November 1999 to January 2000 and had three pupils: a little girl of 6 years old; we did a lot of reading, a teenager of 13 years old (her sister); we repeated her History and a student of 20 years old that was studying to be a midwife and had bad marks in French literature: I tried to make her love to read but I think that today, ... read more

My teaching style is to enable students to learn on their own and take command of their education. I believe that the best way to learn is to make the education process interactive by posing questions and guiding students, rather than have them mimic what I do. By having them think, the students feel more engaged and interested.
During my time as a graduate student, I worked as a teaching assistant. I not only taught labs and led quiz sections but also tutored students. I instilled the physics, math, and writing skills I learned both at Smith and DePaul in my students. We worked on problem sets and lab reports, helping them develop good physics problem-solving techniques and interpret data.
