A Little Bit About Me...

I am a senior at the University of South Carolina Honors College. In May 2013, I will graduate with degree in Biology, a minor in English, and a cognate in Chemistry. My current GPA is 3.928. I was a pre-med student until recently, and I was my high school Valedictorian. I have tutored children in the past from ages 7 to 13, but I am comfortable tutoring all ages. I am also have a strong knowledge of the German language.
I like to provide an explanation, and have the student complete a similar exercise themself, with help from me only as needed.

My comments on tutoring Algebra : Algebra can be easy! There is no reason why students should have to struggle with it. I've seen many reasons why students haven't gotten an A in it, and that's usually because they just aren't focused or can't seem to get motivated. Another problem with Algebra has been making connections with real life. It's very hard for a lot of kids to "get into" something when they can't see the use of it. Those real-world connections really need to be made.

I am very active in the classroom and I believe in making learning fun and enjoyable. There are so many ways to help children learn, yet many of them are not used for one reason or another. If information must be memorized, I like to put it to song or a rap. Other methods of learning that are very useful are concept maps, discussions, and performing. Another very successful method that I've employed is having the student actually teach me rather than me teach the student. It is VERY effective.
I've got around 8 years of college and university work under my belt, and I am getting ready to finish a BA in Elementary Education from Western Governors University. I love teaching. I have 16 years of high school teaching experience and taught Algebra 1 several times over those years. I also served as math department chair, a mentor teacher, and primary curriculum writer. I'm currently a student at PLD Highschool and have taken all the classes listed that I'm tutoring for. Math is something I love to do on my free time and I know the basics, and beyond in some areas. My comments on tutoring Algebra : I am in the process of working on my teaching degree to become a math or English teacher. I love teaching math!

I am a junior at EKU working toward my Bachelor of Science. Education major with concentrations in Math and English.
