I specifically enjoy helping with homework or test prep, where the student has specific problems to work through. Otherwise, I can explain basic concepts and give practice problems to work through. I really like to work through a lot of examples because without practice it can be difficult to apply.

Every student is different. They all have different experiences and learning styles. Sometimes teachers can just try to explain concepts and ideas the way that they understand things. I like to first ask students questions to help me understand where they are, what they specifically do and do not understand. This helps me to figure out how to help the student. Also in my experience, teachers teach only one method of solving a specific problem and that way may not be easy for that student. I like to explain many methods so the student can choose the method he or she understands. Every student can achieve academic success. They just need someone who understands how they learn in order push them forward and give them the confidence they need.

I worked for Kankakee Community College for one year as a Math and Spanish tutor in 2006 and 2007. During this year, I honed the mathematics I learned through high school as well as the four years of Spanish I had taken to that point. After a year, my classes conflicted with my tutoring schedule but I still wanted to help fellow students so I started independently tutoring. After a year of doing so, I went on hiatus to focus on my final two semesters which centered around extensive lab work as well as research writing.
I believe in taking a casual approach in tutoring. From previous experience, I have found that many times students understand the material but tend to get flustered in a classroom environment. I provide guidance when needed, but sometimes students just need someone there to talk it out with them. If this is the case I like to ask questions until they find the answers ... read more

I graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in Economics with a Business Administration minor. I started off as a Finance/Account major but switched after I took some economics courses as electives. With that being the case, most of my business admin credit hours came in accounting and finance. Additionally, I had credit hours in statistics and calculus as I felt that my time would be better spent in classes that would enhance my degree. During my college years I tutored students in economics, statistics, and mathematics. I currently work as a bank manager in town.
I work best with older individuals. I feel that I can provide the best services to those in high school or older. As someone that works with the public at a bank, I generally have to provide information (sometimes complex information) to individuals from all walks of life. Sometimes I am dealing wi ... read more

I like to help people in any way I can. I worked as tutor for federally funded TRIO department where I helped economically disadvantaged and first generation college students who had difficulty with the class material. I'm very patient, easy to get along with, and good at developing rapport with my students. I'm good at understanding students’ learning styles and very flexible in changing my teaching styles according to students' needs. I always try to make learning material interesting by relating it to the real life scenarios or other interesting examples with which students can relate to. My goal is to help students succeed in their education so that they could make a difference in their lives.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a BS in Physics from U of I. Returning for grad school after the Navy, I earned my M.S. in Physics and did advanced work before deciding not to pursue a Ph.D. In the Navy I spent two years as an instructor at Naval Submarine School. During grad school, I taught Physics 211(Mechanics), 212(Electricity and Magnetism), 280(Nuc. Weapons and Arms Control), and 140(Physics for non-technical majors). I developed the curriculum and taught Phys 143(Waves&Modern Physics) for two semesters at Parkland. I have tutored physics at U of I, and tutored math in basic algebra and statistics. I would be comfortable helping with high school physics and math (algebra, trig, calc) up through the introductory undergrad physics sequence.
I truly enjoy teaching basic physics and mathematics and have been told I am pretty good at it. One of my greatest strengths is the ability to expla ... read more

I have a BS in psychology with a minor in biology from the University of Illinois. My focus has been on medicine and science, working in adult medical education for over 12 years. I owned a medical education company for five years, working with physicians who would be considered the top two percent in their fields in the world. We developed curriculum for doctors, pharmacists and nurses to teach them about new drugs and new research, all with the hope of improving patient care. During this time, I honed my grammar skills by writing and editing journal articles and medical monographs. Along with my experience in adult education, I have always had a love for children. Shortly after college, I worked in and then ran a before and after-school program for an elementary school. Over the years, I have helped students in an unofficial tutoring capacity in many subjects, from teaching m ... read more
