A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored elementary students while in high school. These students were the ones with slight learning disablities. I tutored in college both in chemistry and biology but mainly chemistry. I have been in the workforce for many years and feel that my knowledge would be helpful to others. I have also tutored in math, mostly algebra.
I don't have a set style. I try to evaluate how the student learns and build from there.

Taught AP, Honors and Regent level Biology and Honors Physics at Preston High School in NY Most of my students recieved Mastery or above on state exams at the end of the year.Most of my students scored above 620 on the SAT biology subject exam. Tutored throughout my college years the subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology and Microbiology.
My methods are rather traditional. I beleive that there is no way around hard work. I will explain the problems in many different ways in order for the student to grasp a particular concept. I really enjoy working with students, especially at the college level, who have not experienced a great deal of success in a particular subject and aspire to do better. I believe that the key to any kind of scientific or mathematical learning is repetition. It is first important to get to the heart of the concept, and see what is holding someone back from understanding something. When tutoring, I feel it is best to sit back and review the student's work and watch him/her in action. Once I have established where he/she needs work, I show the student a different way of looking at the problem(s). I use their motivations to demonstrate the value of learning the subject in which he/she struggles. I show the student different perspectives, diagrams, and use additional resources such as quiz games. I let the student know that he/she is not alone in his/her struggle. I become more of a peer as I let them know that I too have had tutors and was even placed in a special needs class as a child. I am currently a graduating senior at Wilberforce University. When that day comes, I will have a BS in Biology. In my 6 years of teaching experience I’ve come to find out that there is no such thing as a “stupid question.” Each child or adult has a specific way of learning according to their own character. That’s the reason some are faster to learn mathematical concepts while others are faster in literary concepts. I believe in going slow and asking my students to explain what they’ve learned in their own words. If they can do this easily it means they have mastered the concepts. I usually encourage pre-reading before tutoring sessions. A student who has read the chapter ahead will absorb information more easily than one who has not read ahead.
